| Building muscle helps reduce body fat, involves healthy resistence exercise, and helps prevent frailty in ageing. Maintaining and building
muscle
requires the constant supply of
amino acids
to the muscles, and especially immediately before or after exercise. Sufficient high quality
protein
should be eaten at each meal, immediately before bed and immediately after waking.
Cottage cheese
(primarily casein) is a good choice for the morning (eat with a citrus fruit or red apple), and
sardines
(not packed in soybean oil or generic "vegetable oil") for the night (unless your partner objects). If you do not consume protein shakes or bars containing whey or casein (there is some evidence that whey may be the healthier milk protein) immediately before or after exercise, you are wasting much of your efforts. Also, stay away from soy.
